OPEN SOURCE AI MENTOR FOR BLENDER

Let's learn by doing,
not by letting AI do it for us.

BlenderMentor helps us troubleshoot what's going wrong and guides us step by step.

Two ways to use BlenderMentor in our projects.

BlenderMentor diagnostic guidance: Shader connection missing in Blender

Fix what's not working

When something goes wrong, BlenderMentor investigates relevant scene data to help identify possible causes and guides you through a fix.

BlenderMentor guided learning: Step-by-step guidance in Blender

Learn how to make it happen

When you have an idea but aren't sure how to achieve it, BlenderMentor breaks the process into manageable steps and explains why they work.

It understands what you're working on.

Instead of capturing your screen, BlenderMentor connects directly to Blender, so it can inspect relevant details of your scene.

When something goes wrong

It can inspect relevant object transforms, modifiers, materials, and modes to help investigate possible causes.

When you're learning something new

It can check relevant settings in your current project and guide you through the next steps in context.

LEARNING OVER AUTOMATION
Core philosophy

AI shouldn't do it for us.
It should help us learn to do it ourselves.

Modern AI tools often try to take over the controls or generate complete 3D assets automatically. But when software does the work, we don't build spatial intuition, problem-solving habits, or muscle memory.

BlenderMentor provides guidance and reasoning while we make the changes ourselves. We understand why each setting matters and build skills we can apply to future projects.

If a step is ever confusing, tapping Ask ? right next to that instruction lets us ask a follow-up question in context without losing our place. We stay in control while developing genuine Blender proficiency.

Features that support the experience.

In-viewport UI highlighting in Blender

In-viewport highlighting

Blender's interface contains hundreds of buttons and nested tabs. In-viewport highlighting visually guides our eyes to the exact modifier, tool, or setting directly inside Blender so we never waste time hunting.

Hands-on keyboard shortcuts and voice interaction

Voice input and shortcuts

Press [Alt + ↑] to summon voice input right from the keyboard. Ask questions hands-free, and use [Alt + ←] or [Alt + →] to step through instructions without reaching for the mouse.

Secondary display companion view

Companion browser view

The 3D viewport is where the work happens; it shouldn't compete with a wall of instructions. Pop open the guide in a separate browser tab or second monitor to keep the workspace dedicated to the scene.

About

Built after work.
Built in the open.

BlenderMentor is an independent open-source project, currently being built after work on weekends. It started out of personal frustration with trying to describe complex Blender scenes to general chat tools every time a modeling hurdle came up.

Whenever something broke, describing active modifiers, unapplied scales, or object modes took more effort than the actual fix. I wanted an assistant that could query Blender's internal state directly through its Python API, so we could spend less time describing scenes and more time making things.

Whether someone is an artist learning Blender, a writer who appreciates clear documentation, or a developer interested in tinkering with the Blender Python API, everyone is welcome to explore the code, report what broke, or share ideas.

IMPORTANT NOTE

BlenderMentor is an independent open-source hobby project. It is strictly unofficial and is in no way affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by the Blender Foundation or Blender Institute.

Getting started takes just a few steps, including installing the add-on and configuring an API key (like a free Gemini key). Follow along with our walkthrough and see what it feels like to have a companion guiding actual Blender scenes.
